With more than 1 billion consumers using smartphones, and mobile learning being one of the fastest-growing sectors in mobile, smart devices are quickly opening new revenue channels for educators.
Here are three specific ways for educators and trainers to drive additional revenue in this brave new mobile learning world.
No 1. Create a freely available marketing & engagement app
Here you want to package up what content you have at hand into a mobile app. No doubt you have several articles, blog posts, videos or podcasts on your topic of expertise, so you will want to package up this content (along with anything else that positions you as a leader in your field) inside a freely available app. By integrating your app with the social networks such as Facebook & twitter, you instantly open up opportunities to expand your reach while automatically syndicating all in-app activity to your app user’s network of friends and acquaintances.
Mobile is social, so it makes sense to integrate the two.
You will also want to place a code on your website and/or blog that prompts your website visitors to download your app. This will allow you to secure more of your website visitors on your mobile app, which is essentially the same as acquiring an email subscriber. And with paid in-app-subscriptions, clients can simply subscribe to your exclusive mobile training course (i.e. monthly, quarterly or yearly) to consume your course modules from anywhere, and use the native functionalities of the mobile device to submit required video and/or audio recordings to the trainer for review and assessment (if required) all via a single mobile experience.
Here’s how this would work…
Users would simply click on your banner or promotional message (from your free engagement app) to download your course/training app (for free), then once installed, the user can opt to subscribe from within your training app to access course/training materials at the touch of a button, and without having to present a credit card.
Once the user has subscribed (i.e. Monthly, Yearly, or however you would like to charge), they are then allowed to access your mobile course materials, allowing for automatic monthly or yearly revenue generation.
This model works well because you aren’t asking for the user to pay to download the app initially, instead, they download a free app (securing the user), they then have the option to access your course materials after they’ve download the app and all transactions are processed through Apple (or Google Play), while revenues are deposited direct into your bank account
Once you have one course packaged up, you can create multiple training apps for individual courses and then promote each of your training apps from inside your core (free) client engagement app.
Overtime, as you strengthen the relationship with your free app users, you will naturally guide users to subscribe to your paid training apps for monthly or yearly revenues. Which leads us to No.3…
No 3: Use smart push notifications to promote your subscription based training apps and related products or services
Using push notifications, educators can use targeted messaging to drive clients to their paid subscription based apps, or to purchase relevant products (or course registrations) right then and there from inside their core (freely available) engagement application.
